Code 128
Introduced in 1981 by Computer Identics, is used in several
applications that include general industrial, inventory, and retail container markings.
Code 128 encodes all 128 ASCII (0 - 127)characters with a choice of 3 start code sets:
Start Code A: encodes all alphanumeric characters in
uppercase.
Start Code B: encodes all alphanumeric characters in
uppercase and/or lowercase.
Start Code C: encodes numbers in double density pairs from 00
to 99.
Has variable length with a format continuous and linear, can
be scanned in both directions as well as a check digit can be included.
A new version of Code 128, the widely used alphanumeric
barcode symbology, formalizes a series of enhancements made to the specification by the
International Organization of Standards and the European Standardization Bureau over the
past 15 years. The new Code 128 now supports an extended Roman character set represented
by ASCII values 128 to 255. This extended character set includes many of the accent marks
found in European languages but not supported previously in the specification.
