UPC - Universal Product Code

UPC is a numerical symbology used in retail applications. Has two versions: UPC-A and UPC-E, with supplements or not. The UPC-A consists of 12 digits (11 for data, 1 check digit) with the first digit representing the type of product (Number System) followed by 5 digits to identify the manufacturer, and 5 for the product identification.

The UPC-E is a smaller version of the UPC-A, with 7digits for data and 1 for the check digit. Both versions allow for a supplemental two or five digits number to be appended to the barcode, in order to be used with publications and periodicals.
